“Cuilan Loughnane is to Irish craft brewing as Myrtle Allen is to Irish food: the hero of locality” John and Sally McKenna Guide

The White Gypsy brewery was established in 2009 by Cuilan in Templemore, Co. Tipperary

Cuilan says “At the White Gypsy Brewery, we make good beer. Our long- term aim is to make that good beer from malt and hops grown locally and to sell as much of that beer, within 40 miles of the brewery door. We believe that for any community to be a stable environment in which people can live, work and have the prospect of a future, there needs to some degree of sustainability.

And what could be more sustainable than the food we eat or the beer we drink. The more we produce that’s closer to home, the closer the money stays to home. People’s lives improve and the sense of well-being increases leading to strong, vibrant communities. It’s about taking control of our future one small step at a time”

White Gypsy's Russian Imperial Stout won the first ever Irish Drink Award for beer from the Irish Food Writers' Guild - "Described as ‘a brewer’s brewer’, Cuilan is the new Chairman of the Independent Craft Brewers Association of Ireland. Cuilan opened Templemore’s White Gypsy brewery in 2009 with 12 years of craft brewing under his belt. He has actively supported newcomers to the sector, is growing Irish hops and has worked closely with Kildare-based maltsters to develop a malt to Irish craft beer specification. Cuilan takes pride in being the longest-serving hands-on Irish craft brewer.
